The 1,000 Cans Project
What is The 1,000 Cans Project
On November 1, SNAP (food stamp) benefits are expected to run out for nearly 3 million New Yorkers as a result of the federal government shut down.
This is an unusually cruel moment, and one the City has not faced before, so we’re launching a grassroots effort downtown to collect 1,000 cans of non-perishable food throughout November to donate to The Bowery Mission, which has been feeding and supporting New Yorkers in need since 1879 in Lower Manhattan.
Who we are
I’m Sommer Omar, a candidate for State Committee in Lower Manhattan, and our team is organizing this effort because we believe that when circumstances demand it, we have to act with moral clarity, step up, and do what we can to help.
This is a modest effort, but when the federal government falters, local efforts like this are how we refuse to be spectators, cut through the political noise, and take practical action.
How you can help
On Saturdays, November 1, 8, 15, and 22, we’ll have drop-off sites at both the Tribeca farmer’s market (Greenwich & Duane St.) and the Abingdon Square farmer’s market (at Arthur Strickland Triangle) from 10 AM – 2 PM. Come by with any cans you can spare to help us hit the 1,000 mark.
We’re also looking for volunteers. Sign up below to join us and be part of this community effort, every shift counts!
